Explore, Fish, and Camp in the Wild Rivers of the Peruvian Amazon
For those seeking a true angler’s adventure, this expedition takes you beyond the comforts of lodges into the heart of the untamed Amazon basin. Navigate remote tributaries, fish legendary species, and set up camp each night in a new riverside location — surrounded by the sounds of the jungle and the stars above.
All fishing gear, camping equipment, and meals are fully provided. Guided by experienced local fishermen, this journey blends world-class sport fishing with the thrill of wild Amazon exploration.
Day 1 – From Iquitos to the Yarapa River: First Catch in the Jungle
Highlights: Boat expedition, piranha & pacu fishing, riverside camping
Your adventure begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel or the airport in Iquitos. After a 1.5-hour drive to Nauta, board your private boat heading downriver through the Maranhom and Ucayali Rivers, where the Amazon begins to unfold.
By midday, we reach our first fishing spot — a quiet lagoon where you’ll cast for piranhas, pacu, and tucunaré (peacock bass) using light tackle and local bait. After lunch aboard, continue fishing into the golden hours of the afternoon.
As dusk approaches, set up camp on a remote riverbank, enjoy dinner by the fire, and listen to the symphony of nocturnal wildlife.
Day 2 – Yarapa River Expedition: Trophy Fishing for Arapaima and Catfish
Highlights: Deep-river fishing, arapaima & giant catfish, jungle exploration
Wake up with the sunrise and the calls of howler monkeys echoing across the river. After breakfast, we break camp and travel deeper into the Yarapa River, a pristine tributary known for its abundance of large predatory fish.
Here, you’ll target arapaima (paiche), redtail catfish, and tiger shovelnose catfish, using trolling and bottom-fishing techniques. Local guides will share ancestral fishing methods and help identify prime locations based on water depth and current.
After a day of intense fishing, we’ll set camp on a sandy beach, grill part of the day’s catch, and relax under a blanket of stars.
Day 3 – Exploring Hidden Lagoons & Flooded Forests
Highlights: Fly and baitcasting, peacock bass & arowana, night fishing session
Today’s focus is on exploring remote oxbow lakes (cochas) and flooded forests accessible only by small paddled boats. These calm waters are ideal for fly fishing and baitcasting. Species include peacock bass, silver arowana, and pacu, known for their strength and agility.
After lunch in the field, we’ll continue deeper upriver, stopping at secluded lagoons where bird calls and splashing fish break the silence.
As night falls, gear up for an optional night fishing session, an exciting opportunity to catch nocturnal species such as goliath catfish (piraíba) or spot caimans along the shore. Camp overnight in a new location surrounded by untouched rainforest.
Day 4 – Final Morning Fishing & Return to Iquitos
Highlights: Morning fishing, farewell breakfast, scenic return
After an early coffee, enjoy one last fishing session along a calm stretch of the Yarapa River — the perfect time for a final catch before heading back. You might land a silver arowana or dorado catfish to close your Amazon adventure.
After breakfast, we’ll begin the journey back downstream to Nauta and transfer by road to Iquitos, arriving around mid-afternoon.
